Every time, someone notices something in my house or some item I'm wearing that I've gotten at a thrift store...

I feel the compulsive need to tell them where I bought it and how much I bought it for.

And while I hope for the "Are you kidding me? Only $3.00??? That is incredible....Tell me where that store is...I'm going right now!".....I most often get the "Oh...yeah...that is a good price. I sometimes shop the clearance aisles at Target myself." Undecided

I feel like I'm on a personal life mission to turn everyone on to secondhand things...whether they want it or not.

Anyone else feel like a "thrifting pitchman"...minus the grating voice?

OK, I'll admit it. Price is a source of pride for me sometimes. Especially when I find out what something is "actually" worth (I put that in quotes because sometimes there's big difference between actual value and internet value). When something I get cheap is legitimately high-value, then yeah, I crow about it. Like my $5 TurboGrafx-16: not new but still complete in the box. Half-price since it was "half off anything with an electrical cord" day. $50 more got me a box deal on 11 boxed NES games and 7 TurboGrafx games, PLUS an NES PowerPad and zapper. Well, they did ask me how much it'd be worth...oops.

My current thing is my set of vintage mountaineering glasses which I got from Goodwill about a year ago, and then were put on the back burner until I could have prescription lenses fit into them.  They are a constant conversation starter, because people think they are cool.  I tell them that I got them at Goodwill, and they usually respond with something like, "Dang, those are so cool."

Of course, their chances of finding a pair are probably nil, but I plug Goodwill anyway.

My score today (10-4-11) was a Sony SLV-R1000 top-of-the-line S-VHS VCR for $10.00 (not including a remote).  The thing works great.  New (and one place online seems to still have these new) these things were reported to be $1500.  The place that still has them for new has them for $1100.  Must be a shrinking market.  Used, they go for between $85.00 and $275.00, so I figure I did okay.

I thought I was the only one with that tic!!

I can often be seen in outfits which, taken together, should have cost $250 or more.  When I receive a compliment, which is fairly often, I simply cannot resist replying that the entire ensemble (blouse, skirt, and shoes) cost a grand total of $12.

re: the pitchman angle.  I started taking a male friend on my thrift runs, and he started putting together a cheapo thrift wardrobe. At the time, he was working for the Ford modeling agency (i.e. Fashion Ground Zero), and his fashionista co-workers kept asking where he found the awesome stuff he wore.

Most people are a tough sell, and I think they see thrift stores as being only for the indigent and clueless.

The ones in the original lot were R-Type, Splatterhouse, Blazing Lazers, Legendary Axe, Power Golf, Bonk's Adventure and Sidearms. All in their boxes.
