Hey Dianne!  Of course you're a Pucci Lover! You've got TASTE, right? Smiley Smiley

Sorry you were outbid, but keep digging through those bins at the thrifts...as you may remember, this was the way I got my one and only Pucci.

Tell me, what have you thrifted lately?

Ciao, Bella!

Se So I am on a big, thrifting slump.Seriously.I think my next road trip might be further south maybe towards Palm Beach to where the more well to do folks dump off their worn-once  type outfit and dump it in Goodwill bins.We shall see.
How about you?Any good finds???

I think that's a good idea...travel to where the hot stores are. In _Alligators, Old Money and New Mink_, Alison just raves about South Florida and even mentions some places she visits. That is my dream...to go to SF to those places and shop til I drop!

Any good finds...Let's see: First I'll tell you about my good finds, and then I'll tell you about what I haven't found and need.

Good Finds:
1.  Vintage Givenchy scarf--Looks like the floor from the 60s "Smothers Brothers" show. Signed, of course. Colors: 60s blue/blue-violet and chartreuse!  It's in excellent vintage condition. $2
2. Cashmere sweater (100%) in the exact same blue-violet shade as the scarf; may be vintage.   $3.69 (I found this at a different thrift than the scarf, but it's a perfect match!)
3. Franciscan ware California orange planter/bowl, with old mark from 30s, possibly, 1.25
4. vintage Starburst pin, a little dinged, but still beautiful, all rhinestones intact, 1.25
5.  Red Macrame shoulderbag, handsewn lining, $2 (I've already received compliements on it from the "younger generation")
6. Funky "chicken on acid" spoonrest made in Italy, 1.00 (I am a big lover of vintage Italian pottery)

Did I need any of this stuff?  No, though I've been wanting a red, not-made-in-China handbag all summer. What I want and need are clothes--vintage summer clothes, like Alison finds in SF. Vintage seersucker and lightweight cottons. Lady-like skirts and dresses. Are there any?  If there are, I haven't found them!

No polyester, ever!  I HATE it!!!

Palm Beach is looking better and better! Wink Wink

Alison Houtte (sp?) is the author of "Alligators, Old Mink and New Money" a book about one woman's thrifting adventures. She own Hooti Couture an incredibly fashionable thrift store in fabulous Brooklyn NY. Alison was born and raised in South Florida and learned to thrift down there during the 70s. In her book, she mentions some great thrifting sites in that area, that she hits every so often for stock for her store (and some great finds for herself!) The book was discussed on this site earlier in the year.

Here's the link for Hooti Couture:  http://www.hooticouture.com/

If you are going down that way in the future, ChrisMiss...

Have you found any Pucci at thrift stores in FL?  Hell that would be worth the 15 hour drive for me.  Florida is where my people go to die and I'm thinking that all of those wealthy elderly ladies' castoffs have to go somewhere.

Dear Nice Jewish Girl:

After 30+ years of thrifting at thriftstores, flea markets, tag-garage sales, I finally found my first (and only) Pucci just about two months ago.

It is a ViVara ponchette(sp?) about 17" by 17".  I had been patiently digging through a scarf basket not expecting to find much of anything, and then this scarf caught my eye. It is marked with all those little "Emilios" all over it. (There's a pic on here somewhere, but I can't find the thread.) I had to hold it in my hands and think:  "Emilio WHO? because I just never figured on finding such an item. It was a buck, I believe.
I didn't have my glasses with me, so I asked a fellow thrifter if she would verify that the name I saw on it was "Emilio", which see did. I don't think she knew who "Emilio" was, either.

I am in Central Florida which tends to be more "new money" than South Florida (think: Miami, Palm Beach, Lauderdale) or Southwest Florida (think: Sarasota) or even in the Panhandle. We are all about the Mouse here.

Welcome to the board. What do you like to thrift? and what neat stuff have you found?

Ciao,

Wow, I can just imagine the rush.  Once, here in Cincinnati, I was at a Salvation Army in a not-so-nice neighborhood.  There was a giant bin of God knows what, but I felt compelled for some strange reason to rummage through it  Normally, I would be put off by something like that for fear of a sharp object, dirty underwear, what have you...but I continued digging through the bin.  Near the bottom was a vintage Hermes scarf!  That, in addition to a Chanel jacket and a pair of Manolo Blahnik's, is one of my greatest finds.  I collect many things including bakelite jewelry, Weiss brooches, scarves, and vintage bar ware glasses, but my biggest interest lately is vintage coats.  I have over 72 of them.  Cashmere with mink collars, lovely wool ones, velvet opera coats, all kinds.  Unfortunately, vintage clothing is becoming more and more hard to find here at thrift stores, but coats are still found in abundance.

Thank you for the welcome.  This is a great site.

You are going to LOVE it here, dahling. We are a great and diverse group.

You are so right about the rush. Speaking of which, I got a rush reading your FAB finds.

A dream of mine is to find a vintage Hermes anything. Tell me about your scarf...oo, lala, you struck the mother lode! You earned it, after all that digging.

And the Chanel jacket. Another dream of mine.  I read that you sold the shoes at a healthy profit? Good for you!!

Over 72 coats??  Do you have favorites? A favorite decade, perhaps? Material?  I adore vintage clothes.

Can you post some pics?  I would love to see some of your stuff. It sounds magniciant.

BTW, I notice your Sun sign is Cancer??? There are a lot of Cancers here (me included)

I will post some pics tomorrow. I just found a wonderful granny made-afghany looking poncho yesterday at the thrift store and I'm dying to share a photo of that. It has crocheted squares in the design of daisies.  My bf says it's hideous, but he knows that I just ignore him.  My favorite vintage coat is a leopard one from the 1960's, but I have tons with little mink collars.  Funny thing is I would never buy a new fur, but since it's already been dead for 50+ years it doesn't bother me nearly as much. Here's a pic of me in the leopard coat and a Weiss brooch.

Oh, and the Hermes scarf is one of the equestrian ones.  Here is a pic of the Manolo's that I sold on ebay a few weeks back.
