Hanging around with y'all has given me PYREXIA!  Help me!

Today I found for 2.50, the 3/5 quart blue "NEW DOTS" bowl in pretty great condition. I would not have paid attention to it, except for what I have learned here.  I have it on the kitchen table and hubby walked in and said "Great Bowl". So it must be Wink

How'd I do on the price?  Is it worth 2.50? (Jay??)  Is it a piece that is currently collectible?

Basic rule of economics - it's worth what you paid for it.  Nice find.

I have started looking at Pyrex myself, but have yet to find anything that I really like.  There are plenty of the clear glass mixing bowls (modern stuff) but haven't been lucky in finding any of the really cool geometric patterns.  I just can't overload on common stuff that I really don't need.  I want to find some of the striped stuff, and I hold out a hope that someday, I will find some.

That is all.

Thanks, Big Daddy. I never ever knew striped or polka-dot Pyrex existed until I came to this site.  Though I will say that all the Pyrex I've ever looked at in thrifts over the years has been the flowers or colonial stuff. I think the stripes may be hard to find, but the vibes you'd get by finding it and looking at it in your kitchen would be groovy!

$2.50 is a great price.  Congrats on the find.

The dots and stripes patterns are hard to find as they were not made long.

Thanks Jay!  I thought of you when I found it.  It was sitting there all by itself amongst all this kitchen "stuff"  I was surprised that nobody else had grabbed it.

I'm still using the clear Pyrex I received as a college graduation gift in 1983.  Some of the pieces are scratched and stained but I love 'em anyway.  I'm not into floral/colonial patterns, and I've never seen geometric patterns in a thrift.  What I have seen (and bought) are a couple stovetop pieces: a double boiler and a coffeemaker.  What attracted me were their lucite handles attached by metal bands.  I have no use for a double boiler and I don't drink coffee so they just sit on my stove looking cool.  One piece was less than $2 and the other was around $5, so I think your $2.50 purchase was about right.

That is the Pyrex Flameware.  It was made from the 30's through the early 70's I believe.  The handles are clear glass, not lucite.  One thing to be careful of though, is that the old flameware should not be used on a coil type burner electric stove without a special grid to diffuse the heat.  Otherwise the concentrated heat can crack the glass.  I often use my double boiler as 2 separate saucepans, so you do not need to use it as a double boiler.

Great find SeSo!  And it's neat that your hubby LIKED it!

It is funny how this site can influence... I find myself glancing at the purses, pyrex and even the records sometimes... I don't even have a record player.   Roll Eyes

You did really get a good buy-- and points to you for coining the phrase, "Pyrexia." Smiley

Other People's Junk is right-- it's wonderful the junk awareness that we get from the discussions here. It opens your eyes to a lot of new things.

Thanks TSR, but I must give credit to the term PYREXIA to another board member...moniemania, maybe, or mattie 0r moonie, maybe?  It's a wonderful phrase though; as you can see, I borrowed it immediately Smiley Smiley

xo,
SeSo

PS:  I'm glad you like my buy!!!  It is now sitting in it's mid-century modern, regal glory on my mid-century modern table. Taa-daa!

Wow great find!  I am always on the Pyrex lookout but have yet to see the stripes or dot pattern.  I did find one of those oblong shaped 2" high ones with the divider in the center in a beautiful royal blue color not long ago.  Told my husband that I had to have it as it matched the beautiful blue color of our truck LOL.  I have never seen another blue piece like it but if I do...

I thought about this thread today when I was at the Salvation Army.  I saw a gal with a cart that had a nice medium sized Pyrex mixing bowl in green in it!  (Not the 70s avacado green, but the dark green that is more of a pine color.)  I really wanted to ask her what they had marked it price-wise, but I wasn't brave enough.  She had that look like she was guarding her cart!

I just went to the Goodwill at lunch and thought of you all as I saw two Pyrex nesting bowls in beige. They had some sort of floral pattern on them.

If they'd been in my colors, I'd have picked them up. The beige sort of wasn't inspiring.

TSR:  Ahhh, beige Pyrex. That must have been during their "beige" period in the 70s. Smiley Smiley  You are right.  Not very inspiring.

BTW, I LOVE your new pic!!
