Happy Turkey Day everyone!  Hope you all have a nice holiday.  I am going to be making green bean casserole in a little while for a Thanksgiving dinner at GB's boss/friend's house.  Then we are going to Vero Beach tomorrow for a thriftathon.  Anyone else thrifting on Black Friday?

That's a good question!  I guess tomorrow is probably a big yard sale day everywhere for those who don't want to brave the mall, or like me, just hate malls in general.  I was "forced" to go to a mall about six months ago to get new ladies undergarments, something I don't normally thrift, and it was so annoying to walk by this kiosk where they were selling skin care products and have the guy say, "Can I ask you a question?" as I walked by. Of course the question is going to be, "How would you like to have soft, beautiful skin?" or something super lame like that.  I just said no and kept walking, but it bugs me to be solicited like I'm a dope.  The guy had the nerve to look surprised when I said no, like I was being rude or something.  Couldn't he see that I had my "don't get near me" force field activated?  It's also depressing to see all these teenagers hanging out at the mall trying to look cool.  I just want to run through the mall, buy what I need, and keep running towards the car.

the best thing to say to that "classic" pitch is as follows:

them: can i ask you a question?
you: sure.
them: have you ev--
you: hey hey HEYYYY, you only get one.

i've found that works great.

I'm so excited about going thrifting tomorrow.  I know for sure 2 of my favorite thrift stores are having a 50% off sale.  One opens at 8 and I'll be there waiting for the doors to open.

We were on our way home from Thanksgiving with family and at 5:00 there was a line of tents and chairs with at least 30 or 40 people already in line waiting for Best Buy to open in the morning.  I think some stores are opening as early as 4 and then there was one advertising they had a sale starting tonight at 9 PM.

I'd rather do the thrift stores on Black Friday, they keep my wallet in the black for sure!  I think I mentioned in another post that I'm trying to do as much Christmas shopping this year at the thrift as possible.  It will be interesting to see what percentage of gifts I can find this year at the thrift stores.

I too hate the malls and the crowds there.  I don't go to malls unless I absolutely have to.

Good luck tomorrow with your holiday thrift shopping!  Please do tell us how it goes.

I'm with y'all. I hate malls and it's painful for me to go.  I go only under extreme duress Smiley, like for what Cookie said Grin

I know many wonderful people in the retail world in my community. They are to be commended for serving the public the way they do now, as the public is merciless, or I should say, more merciless than ever in its quest for acquisition.

Entire communities are being developed around malls now. They are called "Town Centers" and are the ultimate expression in bringing the best of the absolutely average  (I call it "Mediocrity for All:)) to the citizenry who, of course, suck up those tawdry goods faster than one can say "Overcharged on my credit card".

I read today that stores are now opening on Thankgiving day. For shame! We the people whine about lack of "Family values" but then what do we do?Huh

O, bellas, don't even let me commence 'bout that!

I hope you all had a wonderful day of abundance.

I went thrifting yesterday and found the perfect "Thanksgiving/Harvest" dress at the Goodwill. It's handsewn, cotton, and either is authentically or made in the manner of an Indian (India) dress. It fits me perfectly, which is astounding, is a fabulous "autumnal" print, very ladylike, in good vintage used condition, and cotton to boot.  I call it my "Abundance" dress

Tomorrow is DH's BD and it's his day.  Whatever he wants, even thrifting, is on the schedule.

Glorious Abundance to All,

I'm really looking forward to it. I'll let you know if we score anything.

I shopped till I about dropped today.  I hit the thrift when it opened at 8 then went to 3 more thrift stores.  Stopped shopping around 2:30.  3 of the 4 stores were having 50% off today and they were pretty busy too.  I also got to tell someone about the website so in general it was a thrifty day.

so we went to the thrift stores.. i forgot that there are "quality" shops and "low end" shops! boy, the difference was amazing. i thought grandma was going to give up immediately (we hit the lousy store first thing.) THEN we found an adorable little thrift store with beautiful merchandise. just a small clothes rack, but my daughter loved almost everything on it! she finally decided on a skirt and top. then we went to the assistance league thrift - even grandma found something she fell in love with. you gotta love assistance league...

I usually refuse to shop retail on Black Friday and only go thrifting, but this year I did both.  I found some good deals at both types of stores, even though I didn't get up at 2am like some crazy people!!  I got out of the house at around 9am and met a friend at her house, after breakfast we hit a couple of big stores and then thrifted the rest of the day.  You can tell the economy isn't doing well - the sales weren't as good as they used to be, and the lines were shorter too, according to my friend who loves to shop on BF.  I actually don't mind the mall at all, I mean, I'd rather shop in thrifts, but you can get good deals on the clearance racks and it's GREAT for people-watching!

Salvation Army was having a 50% off sale and they had some AWESOME furniture - I window shopped even though I don't really need any!  I almost didn't buy anything there at all until I remembered my Mum (in Australia) had asked me to look for some cute scrub tops for the girls in her office (she works for a vet) and I found 6 of them, really cute designs, all in fantastic condition and all half off, woohoo!  Unfortunately it will cost me about $20 to mail them to her, far more than I paid for them.  The PO raised the rates for international postage astronomically, it's just ridiculous.
