Gal I work with came back from lunch yesterday to tell me that the (expensive) Goodwill across from where we work has a sign up to notify customers that their .25 Mondays (different color tags go down to .25 on Monday) have now gone up to .50 Mondays.  Inflation I guess.

Not related to the .50 Mondays, she told me there was a wall picture she's been eyeing for the last month that is still priced at $75.00!  She said it's a nice picture but not sure what makes it so pricey.  That place is so expensive on their stuff I rarely buy anything when I go in there.

Maybe someone needs to check that picture out!  Smiley AR last night had one that a lady bought at a ts for $125. She just liked it, didn't know anything about it. She even had to have the ts hold it until dh got paid. I don't know how long ago she purchased it. Appraiser told her it was worth $50k to $70k!!  Shocked You just never know what you'll find next!

Oh, I hate Antiques Roadshow for that exact reason.  That picture is worth $125 until someone pays the woman more for it.

$50K to 70K....Yeah, okay....

....and everyone wonders why Goodwill is so expensive.

See you next time,
bye for now

Funny you guys should mention that the GW is so expensive:

I struck up a random conversation with a gentleman todaywhile I was out and about.  It seems he and missus are hard-core thrifters. But he said that he found the GW here wayyyyy too expensive.  It seems the GW want $17.99 for men's suits. I find that to be tooo expensive, especially for this area.  He gets his clothes at the small, local thrifts and is a big fan of the bag sales

Also, this lovely man did say something that has great resonance with me: "The less $$ you spend on your stuff, the more expensive it makes everything else seem" IOW, if you are used to getting great bags of stuff at $2, one item at $5 seems too pricey. It does work that way, lol. He was nicely dressed, too, and I have to admit, I thought the Mercedes in the parking lot was his Smiley   Not showy or GQ, but quietly well-dressed--appropriate for the area, weather, YKWIM?

I saw that one too.  The lady's reaction was priceless.  I have seen people on that show shocked & speechless when they hear the value of their items, but this lady was jumping up & down & even rubbing her hands together a little as if to say, "Cha-Ching!".  Too funny, I was quite jealous though- a painting like that would never make its way to any thrifts around here.

On Saturday I was fuming in my local Goodwill when I saw that the older "vintage" coats were all priced at $29 to $39. They've got to be kidding. I'm getting more disgusted with GW every day.

Our Goodwill has the cheap color day tags on sale Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  On Sunday, they throw out what is left of that color and bring in the new color.  And yes, they throw it out which I think is sad.

Anyway, clothing is 25 cents and household items are 10 cents.  I got my solid wood coffee table with storage underneath for 10 cents that way.  I think it was just overlooked by others, but I noticed it had the right color tag on it.  So that was good, but I think the reason it didn't sell for full price or even at the 60 percent off mark was that they had it initially priced way too high,

Can't remember what the price was exacrly now, but just remember that I thought at the time I'd expect to find that price in a store for soemthing new, not used!  So, I don't know.  They rather sell something for 10 cents or throw it out rather than making it a decent price in first place?

I haven't been to a GW in quite a while that I thought was overpriced on items.  Most of the ones I've been to had standard prices like short sleeved blouses for $2.99, long sleeved $3.99, prices like that.  I went to a Goodwill Boutique in Naples FL once that had high prices on all the items.  I didn't think any of the stuff they had was any better than what's sold in the other GW stores either.

Actually talking about that painting I hijacked my own thread.

What I really was pointing out was that their .25 Monday certain color tag day has now gone up to .50.

So does anybody have a Goodwill that has .25 days (that the price has been raised)

My GWs have just color days. We have a "Club Goodwill" card for 5% off after you spend $15. The color tags are 50% off. Senior discount day is Tuesday for a whopping 10% discount.

I think the way they are building new facilities is one of the reasons they are having to raise their prices. All of our old stores now are replaced with brand new buildings. I agree that shows like Antique Road Show lead ppl to overprice merchandise.

I also see a lot of "Dollar Store" merchandise overpriced.

My strategy is too know the value and pay what I am willing to pay and let the chips fall where they may. Most prices at GW and many others are non-negotiable but I'd say try. They can only say no. If it's been there a long time - it could happen.

Hey, great observation on the dollar store stuff! Somedays I feel like I have to come home and detox after visiting all our thrifts and sorting through all that cr*p.  Dear Lord, save me!

Did you ever see the cartoon from the 60s, The Jetsons? Remember the theme song:

"Meet George Jetson
Jane, his wife"...

Yesterday I was hitting thrifts and wading through dollar store made in China cr*p. And I heard
"The Jetsons" theme in my head, but a little differently:

"Made in China
"'Cause it's cheap"...

Anybody out there is welcome to add the next verse, lol. But dew, I "dew" know what you mean, LOL!

And yes, the Antiques Roadshow and especially "Evil-bay" have jacked up prices tremendously.

Meet George Jetson,
his boy, Elroy,
his daughter Judy,
and Jane, his wife,
who spends more than he earns" . . .

. . .because she doesn't shop at thrift stores!

Come to think of it, there were no thrifts in the Jetsons world, were there? Drat!  Everything else was so cool, but you would think there would be thrifts!

Thanks for reminding me of one of my favorite cartoon shows!

Now, if I can remember correctly, wasn't Rosie a "thrifted" robot?  I thought she was being scrapped because she was an obselete model, and the Jetsons took her in.

I've thrifted robots as well.  I purchased my HeathKit Hero jr. at my local Goodwill.

And again I am jealous.  Our GW doesn't offer anything like .50 Mon. or Club Cards.  Our GW is less than 6 years old so it is still a baby.   Maybe it needs to grow up to be like the others. Cheesy
