My mom had a very good friend named Julia. They met because of a common interest in dollhouse miniatures.
Julia was quite well off and she used to take a group of 8-15 good friends to these formal tuxedo and gown gala events. They serve dinner, there''s door prizes and each person''s seat costs around $300. These events are for charity and they usually have celebrities that appear and perform. She took me to one once and I met Spanky McFarland and Shirley Jones sang a dozen songs. Anyhow, my parents went to one of these events with Julia, and Julia complimented my mom on the gown she was wearing. My mother confessed that she had gotten the dress that weekend at a Goodwill thrift store in Longwood for $15. Julia immediately brought everyones attention to my mom''s dress, telling the entire group about my mom''s great buy. My mom is not the type to brag about a great thrift score and was totally embarrassed. Julia on the other had was the queen of saving money, and was tickled. I guess that''s how she could afford to have so much fun.
She once offered to send me and any friend I chose to Hawaii for 2 weeks just because I liked surfing, What a lady! She is missed.

I was in the Carribean a two years ago.  I was there on business and as a result was actually staying on a few of the islands, and having to occupy myself.  One afternoon, I just set out walking and found a great thirft store.  I made a few purchases.

That evening, I was invited to join some ladies at a progressive social/drinking event that moved to various spots on the island.  The ladies asked what I''d done that day.  I was a bit hesitant at first to mention I went thrifting -- but once I did, it was a big topic of conversation.  The other ladies liked thrifting, and the shop in question had a very interesting story behind it -- and is supported by many ladies on the island.  Turns out I ended up spending my day "like a native."

Thriftily,
Alexandra
