I would imagine it would - the sodium in it does it.   Another good one is boric acid.   I had my husband put it in the basement walls when he was redoing it and putting in new drywall.........I don't like bugs!  (except lady bugs and butterflies - oh  and bees....)

Alexandria - until you can fog, sprinkle baking soda on the carpets every night and vacuum the next day sometime - it dehydrates the fleas, other critters, etc. and kills the eggs too.   Will help in the process and free you up some!

Foutchie, does baking soda work for silverfish and carpet beetles?  They are my sworn enemies.

I've never heard about the baking soda.  I've always heard that Borax was good for that stuff.

I sprinkle boric acid on my bookshelves (behind the books) but I'm hesitant to sprinkle it on my carpet because Gromit will get it on his paws and lick it off.  Baking soda seems like a safer alternative.

Yes, behind the walls is the only place I'd feel safe with boric acid - I know from personal experience that baking soda on the carpets does help kill the fleas.  We routinely "foster" mother cats and their kittens in the spring from the pound until they are old enough to be adopted - and usually have some "parents" ready by the time the kittens are ready!   Got many a flea from the incoming brood and didn't want to harm the kittens nor my children or our animals.
Dawn dishwashing liquid is great for killing fleas on the animal themselves =- you can literally see the dead ones float to the surface of the fur, even okay to use on young kittens with no poisonous effects.
