After about one and a half months of looking, I finally found The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon.  In paperback.

It was excellent.  I used my RAS in a different way.  After looking for so long, I went to a Border's Books and imprinted (on my brain) what the book actually looked like.  In less than a week, I had one at the Goodwill at Happy Valley and 15th Ave.

YAHTZEE!

That is all.

I've done the same thing. Imprinted the image of what the book looks like.
I have not found the book yet, but the image is burned into my brain.

Glad you found your much sought after book.

VERY cool-- yes, knowing what you're looking for is a huge key to being able to find it.

Sounds like you got in the zone. :-)

Great idea!  Next time the SPCA book sale rolls around, I'll check amazon.com first and mentally imprint the covers of my "want list" books.

That is great!  I have thrifted every one of Diana Gabaldon's books except for A Breath of Snow and Ashes.  Even knowing what it looks like hasn't helped me to find a copy of that book for my daughter.  Have you found it yet?

secondhand sophisticate, here is a paragraph re: artist margaret keane, on whom i am so keen:
**************
Margaret Keane, for many years, was married to a man who claimed credit for what she painted. To prove she was in fact the artist and not her former husband, she painted in court before a Federal Judge and jury, an original oil on canvas painting. When her ex-husband was asked to paint by the judge, his reply was: "I can't today, because I have a sore shoulder." Needless to say Margaret won the case and she continues to paint those Big Eyes we have come to love so dearly.
***********
her big-eyed girls from the 50s and 60s is what i am most coveting...i know i can find at least an original print if i squeeze my eyes shut and say, "i think i can, i think i can..."

I remember the story about the Keane paintings but I don't remember her paintings as much as I do the waifs with big eyes.  I found the names of the artists but no information on the artist.  Perhaps someone here knows more about them.  Eden and Maio are the two I found on ebay that I remember those pictures from the 60's.

ChrisMiss and Pop-pirate, I also remember those big-eyed paintings/prints  from the 60s, though the Margeret Keane paintings are very special! Those eyes have a depth that is endless...I never knew anything about the artist, but I will keep my eyes open for her work (which, I am sure, is now impossible to find) Thanks for the info!
