..the latest martha stewart has a dining table in an old farmhouse with mismatched antique chairs. i had a friend in the bay area who had a giant dining table - it was a huge thing that took up the whole room. she had all sorts of wonderful chairs all around it. i think the scale is important with the mix and match idea - in this case, the chairs were all "lightweights" next to this enormous table. it felt like we were having tea with alice in wonderland whenever we sat there.

My aunt, back in the 70s mind you, had an antique table and mismatched antique chairs around it - I guess she was ahead of her time!
