Here's some data on my Merry Christmas - Jackie Gleason album:

Capitol Records W758 - High Fidelity (not stereo)

On the rear jacket:
For all who treasure the memories and the sentiments and the romance of Christmas time, this is a rich, rewarding album in the gentlest spirit of the season.

Here is warming, fireside holiday music, of a kind that is meant for those precious hours when evening reaches toward dawn and thoughts drift into dreams of holidays gone by, and of those yet to come.

The mood is soft with the glow of Christmas lights seen through a snowfall, and gay with the stir of a tree-trimming party.

The melodies are familiar ones, but their settings most certainly are not, for even Jingle Bells emerges as a lovely, almost haunting thing in the hands of Jackie Gleason, the showman who so deftly turns listening into a constantly fresh and memorable event.

Track listing:
I'll be home for Christmas
Christmas in Paris
Jingle Bells
White Christmas
Santa Claus is Comin' to Town
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
The Christmas Song
I've got My Love to Keep Me Warm
Snowfall
By the Fireside
Home
Happy Holiday
Winter Wonderland
The Story of a Starry Night

That is all.

Boy, you do know how to find 'em. How is Gleason as a singer, by the way? I anticipate it to be less than melodic, but sometimes folks surprise you. :-)

Actually, he's not a singer. He had a couple dozen albums, and every one (that I know of) has been a soft, mood music instrumental kind of joint. Here's a good scoop on The Gleason Touch from Space Age Pop.

Big Daddy--Merci, Danka, Grazia, and thank you so much!

It sounds exactly like what I'm looking for, and what I heard somewhere this past Christmas and decided I MUST have this album  It sounds just like the copy Smiley Smiley    It is divinely schmaltzy, you know, like angels might have sounded in the 60s if they had a band Grin Grin

Even you evah come across a copy in good condition, let me know. I have never found one of these anywhere, though I do have "Jackie Gleason plays Romantic Jazz"  There's a pic of him--painted, of couse, with the silhouette of a dinner band in the background "under the stars"  It's Capitol records Hi Fi W568 (if anybody's interested, and on the back there are b&w designs of what look like amoebas, with  atomic stars or sunbursts in them.

Ciao, Bella Fortuna, and Away WE Go!!!

Zed, thank you for the great link. Yes, it describes his "mood" music perfectly.  You know, stuff guys of yore would stack on their record players in the hopes of getting lucky Wink Wink  It really does have that effect Shocked Shocked

Bravo!! on Duran-Duran and "Ghost in the Machine"  Good Scores!

My hubby and I were at a Savers. He always very painstakingly goes through albums wherever we thrift--it's his job, let's say Wink  He found the following albums:

A Lion in Winter Soundtrack--minty cover
Sergio Mendes/Brasil 66-- minty covers
Middle Eastern Folk Music-minty cover

All should be joyful in Whoville, right? Wrong!  It appeared as though someone (previous owner(s)) had taken keys to the albums or ice picks or some dreadfully sharp instrument and just carved and carved and carved to their heart's delight.  To add insult to injury: Savers want 1.99 for each one!  Needless to say, we walked away.

I admire those of you who can find vinyl that has not been previously used as a cutting board  Roll Eyes

Sergio Mendes is one of my favorites - I'm assuming the one with the knife marks and the mint cover was the Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes and Brazill '66 album.  I have one of those with a very nice to mint cover and absolutely mint vinyl.  I also got (simply for the asking) another Mendes album from a guy in FL on the 70s audio mindset Yahoo list.  It looked like it had been played twice.

That is all.

so i'm wondering.. and i'm sure i'm sticking my foot in my mouth with what i'm about to say... but since i'm at amoeba so often.... i CAN perhaps look for some vinyl for people....

is there a "wishlist" section where i can look at what albums people would love to have, and perhaps i can come across them - at either amoeba or any record shop i happen to visit...

just a suggesion... and an offer i guess Smiley

BDA, Herb Alpert did not enter into the picture at all with the Sergio Mendes albums...I believe one of them he found was "The Look of Love".  I used to listen to that all the time in '68/'69. It was my mother's (it's been played to death) and then my husband found me another in better condition.  I can't believe somebody else likes Sergio Mendes Smiley

There's a Seinfeld episode that involves George and Kramer getting old vinyl and selling it to make some money and Jerry complains that all that's there is some "old Sergio Mendes, and who cares?"  I care!  I was highly insulted Angry  I used to funk out in jr. high to "O So Many Stars" Cool

Which ones do you have?

Now for the find of the day! in Christmas Vinyl!!!

My husband took me thrifting for my BD and he found us four great albums...one of which is the Christmas album: "Ferrante and Teicher:  Adventures in Carols"  It's got a cover of Santa on a rocket. The music is quite interesting for 1956. It's the original Westminister recording.  It's in pretty good condition, not mint like the other three he found (which I will discuss in another topic in the future) but for .25 and the utter rarity for us to find something like this, definitely worth picking up. Quite progressive for its age, I think.  Has anybody heard of this?

If you want to see the cover, here's a link:  http://falalalala.com/?p=6

It's quite an interesting site on Christmas vinyl--there's some neat info there.

Eddie, thank you for the kind offer. What is ameoba?

My favorite christmas vinyl is the Partridge Family christmas album.  I've had it forever, and its gotten to the point that its just unplayable anymore.  I guess it really doesn't matter since my turntable needs a new cartridge and I just haven't spent the money on it.

Actually, Herb Alpert was quite involved with Brasil '66 - He produced their first album, and it is called Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66.  Herb Alpert was one of the founders of A&M Records, and the debut Sergio Mendes album is A&M SP4116.

I have at least 2 copies of Herb Alpert Presents, a copy of Fool on the Hill, and a copy of Crystal Illusions (that's the one I got just for asking).

Here's a link to a Sergio Mendes page:  http://www.brasil66.com/mendes1.php
