Hi,

FWIW, I picked up an avocado green tensor lamp from GW.  This is the 2nd avocado green tensor lamp purchased from a thrift shop.  This one perches on its own chrome/steel stand and when closed looks sort of like an egg shaped flying saucer angled on the stand, ready to take off.  The low-off-high switch is embedded in a fake wood grain panel.

The previous lamp folded up into a small cylinder that looks something like a small plastic thermos bottle when closed.

So ... any thoughts on avocado green appliances, tensor lamps, related memories, etc.  My previous apartment had an avocado green fridge and I remember a time when this was popular.  Sometime in the 70s if I recall, but maybe it started in the late 60s.

To me this is one of those "finds" that makes thrift shopping worthwhile.

Thanks

I'm a green guy too. i just bought a avocado green bowl that I totally love. Cookie on the other hand isn't as fond of it as I am.
She likes a hospital greenish light blue most.

Of the seventies colors, avocado green to me is the easiest on the eyes. Like Cookie, I'm happier with the hospital green shades, but have a few things in the avocado. Gaudy candlesticks, for instance. Smiley

I grew up in the era of Avocado green, gold and orange decor - I'm afraid it's something I'm not yet ready to go back to - although I noticed that my niece (in her 30s) is using it in her color scheme.......

Avocado green is coming back.  Pottery barn has been issuing stuff in the color, but I forget what they are calling it.  I think they are calling it celery.  Of the 70's appliance colors I shall now rate them from my favorite, to my least favorite.  Harvest Gold (yellow), Coppertone (rusty brown), and then Avocado (green).  I guess Harvest Gold is my favorite because that's the color my mom had in her kitchen when I was growing up, and the laundry room was Avocado green.  On a side note, she just replaced her Avocado Green dryer.  Dad could have fixed it, but felt that they got their moneys worth out of it, and they could have a quieter and more efficient dryer.

My oven (geniune vintage) is harvest gold.  I almost cried when the matching fridge died --- now our fridge is white.

All of the colors go so well together...I especially like the burnt orange and the aqua "pop" colors!  Not only appliances, but the pottery and glass from that era are enhanced by these brilliant colored as well!

I love the "pink" appliances and kitchens of the 50's! Now there are special sites that sell "pink" appliances but they are very expensive, I think a frigerator in pink would go for $3000 to $4000 etc, You are essentially paying more because of the color, but oh how I would love a "pink" kitchen! Never been a big avacado fan, I tend to gravitate toward sage green.  Just this morning however I stopped by a tag sale going on at a local nursing home.  I spent all of 30 cents for three things from the 10 cent bin (plus got a bunch of free puzzles).  One of those items was a big avacado planter.  It is marked Florentine, which I was not familiar with.  Turns out it is made by McCoy during the Mt. Clemens era.  It needs a good cleaning & I have to work out some white tape marks with some goo-gone, but pretty good for a dime!

WOW!  That's a nice planter... I love the ones that have that flat glaze... they just look neat, no matter what color!

On the 70s note... My main kitchen colors are orange and cobalt blue, so I love that there is alot of 70s orange stuff to be had in the thrifts.

I am definitely not a fan of avocado and harvest gold.  I lived through the seventies once and don't need to do it again.  Pink and aqua, on the other hand, make me happy.  Maybe if I'd lived through the fifties I wouldn't like them!
