A couple of years ago my son asked for a GoreTex rain suit for his birthday.  He is an avid outdoorsman and was planning a 3 week back backing trip to New Mexico for the coming summer.  The suit he wanted was about $200, a tad pricey but it was his 21st birday so DH and I got it for him. The pants and jacket were priced seperately, pants around $70, jacket about $130 in Army green.
And don't you know,  a month or so later I found an Army green Gore Tex rain jacket at my favoirte thrift shop, marked $15.  Haven't seen one before or since but of course right after spending big $$ on one, I find one at a thrift.  I even had a $5 coupon so the thing ended up costing me $10 plus tax.  I bought it because my husband sometimes goes with my son and other times my son's friends go too and I figured someone would use it.
Yesterday DS went camping with some buddies. It had been cool and rainy so he took his GoreTex gear.  And what did he come home wearing this morning?  Not the pricy camping store jacket but the humble $10 jacket from the thrift.  I asked why he wasn't wearing the birthday suit (pun intended) and he replied "Oh this one fits better."
Let's see, the $10 thrift shop one fits better than the one I overpaid by $120 does.  I need Excedrin.  Long live thrifts.

Oh yes!

We too looked for a turntable to play records on for months. WHen I finally paid over $100 for one, we saw 4 within a month at thrifts for no more than $20. Go figure.

That seems to be a general rule with thrifts, very frustrating sometimes!

And yet if you put off buying it and look in a thrift - it could take years if you even do find whatever you are looking for.

I think there is some unwritten law of the universe, as soon as you buy something at a retail store, you find it at a thrift.  If you don't  buy it, you never find it.  I haven't seen any other Gore Tex gear since I found the jacket but then I haven't been looking to buy any either.  Some sort of inverse law.  The harder you look for soemthing, the less likely to find it.  Stop looking, and you find it easy peasy.  Just some of the fun of thrift shopping.  Never knowing what is out there.
