« on: November 23, 2008, 11:52:41 AM »

i haven't been to the thrifts much lately, but in october i totally scored for the season: i got a springbok jigsaw puzzle that is nothing but toy santas! last year i got these really cool swedish modern wooden ornaments to add to the tree.

other than the shiny brite bonanza i've been reading about (was that TSR? you rock!) anybody else gotten anything nice for the holidays lately?

There is a local nursing home that has a tag sales three or four times a year.  For some reason books & puzzles are free, you would love it because there are usually a number of vintage springboks in the pile.  I picked up "A Christmas Carol" 1000 piece springbok puzzle at the last one.  I did also find an animatronic Santa Homer Simpson for sister & brother-in-law's animatronic Christmas figure collection.  A perfect one since The Simpsons is their favorite show.

I've been really sick and haven't been able to get out. I finally had enough energy to go to my Sis'. She had presents for all.

Well, I got up my gumption . . . took off to Value Village . . . they are also called something else, but it's still Value Village in the Pacific NW.

For less than $40 I bought for Sissy, her Hubby, Nieciah (who just happens to be my niece) and my two great nieces. Wow! What fun! I took advantage of 'Granny' day. 40% off. I just wish I could do that more often.

Somehow I zoned out and missed our local library's end of season book sale, (2 days!) but happened to walk in for the last 5 minutes.
In a panic I rushed around and came out with 6 Christmas albumns (vinyl) from 60s/70s  for 50 cents.
Think I will display the cover art.

I picked up 3 all linen hankies at a little estate sale in their original Macy's box all still have there price tags pinned to them with a straight pin 3for $1.33
and the box!!! Its a box and on the cover its all the famous new york buildings and there names and the macys store in the middle and it says something like if you havent seen Macy's you havent seen New York I paid .50 for it...man was I tickled!!

You've got to photograph them and post them here in time for Christmas!

Found a Vera Bradley small cosmetic bag & wallet in the  piccadilly plum pattern today for 99 cents each.  Not with tags but in excellent giftable condition, plus it is a retired pattern so not a big deal that they are not brand new.  I just happen to have a big Vera fan on my gift list so that saved me quite a few bucks!

I don't know if they came out with this pattern for a Christmas season, they retired it a few years ago, but it is perfect for Christmas.  Here's a Ebay listing for a cosmetic/brush bag like the one I found.

Snowed in today, but thrifts are closed anyway.  Yesterday roads were not so good so I only got over to the stinky SA.  There was a bag of solid color shiny brites for 99 cents, but I have so many now I left them there.  I did get over to the good SA on Friday before snow hit & found two 1968 Empire tabletop blowmolds with cords & bulbs for 89 cents each.  Also a few vintage Christmas cards & ornaments.  I have a little Union products Santa in the living room already so I will have to find a good spot for these now.

Reading about the different Christmas puzzles made me envious.  I haven't found a Christmas puzzle to fix this year. Cry  The last jigsaw puzzle that I fixed was of Indians.  Not very festive! Cry

That reminds me of a lot of vintage 50's Tuco puzzles I found at a sale this summer, including a Native American scene puzzle.  My favorite was a fifth puzzle with a beautiful winter scene that I wanted to do, but the pieces were moldy on that on so I ended up chucking it, too bad.

I got one of those puzzles lately myself.  I love the older puzzles.  I like the thickness of the pieces and the different shapes.  Puzzles today are fine, but I guess I'm nostalgic.  I tend to pick up a lot of nostalgic things when I thrift.  I love the children's board puzzles, but I've yet to find an old one that had a piece or two in it that is shaped like a toy or animal.  They don't do that anymore, as far as I know.  Does anyone have any interesting puzzles?

I got a tiny Christmas tree for my daughters room, complete with a strand of lights (only $3).  Its only about 1.5 feet tall, but perfect for her room.  Its replaced her nightlights for the time being.  We decorated it with unbreakable ornaments and she loves it.

I also scored another Christmas tree that I'll use next year in our hallway.  Its about 2.5 - 3 feet high.  No lights with it, but thats ok, I have plenty here.

I got a little thrifty Christmas gift for myself today.  A few weeks ago I was looking for a hurricane candle holder.  I was hoping for a vintage one with etching or silvering.  Couldn't find the right one so I gave up.  Today I got a very pretty etched cranberry glass tea light holder with a silver plate base.  Not vintage, it has the store tag still on it, price omitted- I'm curious how much it originally sold for.  I paid 4 bucks.  I left the tag on in case I need a last minite gift for someone, but I think I will end up keeping it.
