It's a phrase we hear everyday in the business world: location, location, location.

Where is the best spot for a thrift store? What part of a city seems to be the best? What kind of stores are around your thrift store, and do they seem to help steer customers to your store?

Many times being near another thrift store or two is a good thing. Thrifters will be more likely to visit both or all three store at the same time. In Naples FL, there's an area where there are a dozen thrift shops within 2-3 blocks of each other.

Aha! Someone who agrees with me. I was telling my girlfriend it would probably be beneficial to be close to another thrift store. She thought it was a horrible idea. But, personally, I think people would visit both.

I was also thinking maybe it would be good to be located next to a business where customers might be waiting for food, or waiting for an appointment of some sort. So pizza shop, maybe a dentists office etc... A lot of times people will bring family or friends with them, they might get bored and want something to do.

It is great to be near your competition if indeed you are competing.   Remember to keep a friendly atmosphere and a clean organized store with good prices and you should be fine.   Advice that we received was to be a close to Wal Mart as possible.  Every body sooner or later goes to Wal Mart even thrift store shoppers and is convenient for donors to drop off while they are at Wal Mart!

Our items tend to be more eclectic and trendy like vintage and international thrift items, so our store is in an artsy area. There are other thrift shops nearby as well as art shops, local restaurants, fashion shops, antique furniture shops and more.
